Hornswoggle: A delightfully piratical word for cheat or dupe or trick. If Gilbert and Sullivan never used it, they should have.

Jean Strouse (American biographer, cultural administrator, and critic), a reflection from the Oxford American Writers Thesaurus (via oupacademic)

Must find a way to work this into conversation….

Thatcher funeral protesters get police go-ahead to turn backs on coffin

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2013/apr/14/thatcher-funeral-protesters-police

Protesters planning to demonstrate along the route of Lady Thatcher’s funeral procession have been given the go-ahead by police to turn their backs on the former prime minister’s coffin as it makes its way through central London to St Paul’s.
Scotland Yard has repeatedly asked people planning demonstrations to let them know in advance, warning that anyone causing “harassment, alarm or distress” could be arrested under section 5 of the Public Order Act.
But Rebecca Lush Blum, 41, from Hampshire, who has set up a Facebook event calling on people to turn their back on the funeral procession, said she had spoken to the police and had been reassured that her protest could go ahead near the Royal Courts of Justice.

How terribly civilised.

Bubbles the Chimp all but forgotten by the Jackson family →

faunachimps:

Just like so many former pop stars, he has been left forgotten and spends most of his time listening to the CDs which made him famous. But this 90s star is unlike the others… it’s Michael Jackson’s pet chimp, Bubbles

I have to admire the British people.  When Ronald Reagan died, did you see this level of popular support among Americans for a nationwide pissing on his memory?  No, you did not.  To our everlasting discredit.
But the plucky sons and daughters of Albion are rising en masse to send the Baroness Thatcher off to her final resting place.  Which, as I understand it, is quite toasty this time of year.  Well, year-round, really.
In that spirit, I share with you the song that has become to the Thatcher passing what “Candle in the Wind” was to Princess Diana’s.  From MGM’s 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz: “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead.”

“Ah, Kirk, my old friend, do you know the Klingon proverb that tells us revenge is a dish that is best served cold?”

Ah - saved me from having to go looking for it myself….. at least it is unlikely that anyone will be playing “The Bitch Is Back” in Maggie’s memory….. xx
